How do I use an ITF-14, and make an ITF-14 out of my UPC or EAN?
ITF-14 barcodes are used for cases containing other retail-labeled products – that is, there's multiple UPC or EAN labelled products for sale inside a bigger box.
For example, let's say that your company makes document scanners. Each scanner is in a retail box with an EAN-13 barcode on it – then, there a 'case' with 12 retail-packed scanners inside that's easy for me to send to retail stores. Further, there's also a bigger possible 'case' -- a palette of 12 cases, or 144 scanners.
To make receiving inventory of cases and palettes easier, we use an ITF-14 barcode on the bigger levels of packaging, which represents a) the retail barcode inside, and b) a number indicating the 'packaging' level.
The packaging level (the 'indicator digit' in the graphic above) is the first number, an arbitrary number that can be any value between 1 and 7 (then you let your trading partners know the values you're using). We suggest using higher numbers for 'bigger' cases. So, for example, '2' could be the case of 12 document scanners, and '5' could be the palette.
Following the indicator digit is your EAN-13 barcode value. So, if your UPC is 12345678911, your EAN-13 would be 012345678911, and your ITF-14 for a '2' packaging level would be 203123456789117. (Take note that the check digit changed, because the barcode value changed, but it represents the same base retail barcode.)
Create Multiple Barcodes At Once
UPC-A barcodes appear on retail products sold in the United States and Canada. The symbology encodes a 12-digit Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN), along with an optional extension of 2 or 5 digits. UPC-A barcodes identify both the manufacturer and specific item of a product – they're scanned at retail checkout or in warehouses to identity the item.
Where do I get a retail barcode number?
If you don't have one already, there are a few ways to get a unique barcode value for your product:

- Register with GS1, the regulatory agency for UPC/EAN barcodes in the United States. In other countries, there's generally a local chapter of GS1. You pay them an annual or one-time fee to reserve a barcode prefix – the first part of your UPC is the prefix, then the remaining numbers are the number that you assign to a particular item.
- Use the prefix that your company already owns and produce a barcode for a new unique number under that prefix.
- Get a single barcode value from a company that already owns a prefix and will sell you one of their barcodes. You can easily find all sorts of these kinds of companies online.
Once you have a UPC/EAN barcode value, you can enter that number into Barcode Producer to generate your barcode. So, your number comes from somewhere else, and Barcode Producer turns that number into a scannable barcode.
Why is the last digit of my retail barcode wrong?

It isn't. The last digit of all UPC, ISBN and EAN barcodes is called a check digit. Barcode Producer automatically calculates this for you so that an incorrect check digit can’t be used (thereby rendering an invalid barcode). You can also verify the correct check digit using GS1’s check digit calculator.
If you enter the wrong check digit, Barcode Producer will ignore your incorrect input and enter the correct check digit.

How does UPC/EAN barcode height adjustment work?
Barcode Producer can make your barcode shorter or taller than the default, internationally accepted default size using the Bar Height option. Shorter barcodes are, for example, very commonly used in size restricted situations. Adjusting the height of the barcode does not affect its scanability because the width is not affected by this change.
Technically, adjusting the height of a UPC/EAN can be considered a violation of generally accepted standards for UPC/EAN generation when used in environments governed by GS1, a retail standards organization. We provide this option because it a) is very widely and successfully used in the global market on small labels, and b) does not affect the scanability of the barcode. In general, you should leave the height at its default option unless there's some specific reason to change it.
Do I want a UPC or an EAN? How do I convert between the two?
UPC-A barcodes (12 digits) are typically used in the United States and Canada; EAN-13 barcodes (13 digits) are used everywhere else in the world.
These barcodes, despite having different names, are actually exactly the same in terms of the bar pattern – they're both 13-digit barcodes. A UPC-A's first encoded digit (hidden in the text below the barcode for a UPC-A) is always 0. So, you can make the same barcode in an EAN-13 by simply adding the 0 yourself. If your prefix is from outside the United States, it doesn't start with 0. Here's a complete list.

When I make a UPC-A barcode, the leading and trailing numbers are slightly smaller - how can I make them all the same size?
UPC-A barcodes, by specification, have the left number (number system) and right number (check digit) as bit smaller than the other numbers. Not doing this is against the UPC-A specification that Barcode Producer strictly adheres to (see section 5.2.5 of the GS1 General Specifications – page 257 – for more information).
For UPC-A and UPC-E barcodes, the size of the first and last digits should be reduced to a maximum width equivalent to four modules. The height is reduced proportionally.

It's worth noting that an EAN-13 barcode does not have such a requirement – so, you could consider converting the UPC barcode to an EAN-13 (by adding a 0 to the beginning) to make an equivalent barcode that does have every number as the same.
